1 The short version Start here
What is this page for?

To be honest about the difference between teaching and treating

Kids Eyes exists to help you understand your child's eyes. Almost everything we publish, our articles, condition pages, courses and resources, is education.

It helps you know what is going on and what to expect. It is not a diagnosis, and reading it does not make Dr Claire your child's doctor.

Care is different. When you book a consultation and Dr Claire examines your child, that is a professional medical service, and it is where diagnosis and treatment happen.

We would rather say that plainly here than have you find it out at the wrong moment.

What if my child needs help right now?

Close this page and go to casualty

This website is not an emergency service, and neither is an email or a message to us. Nobody is watching for urgent messages.

Do not wait for an appointment if you notice

  • Sudden loss of vision
  • An eye injury
  • Severe pain
  • A chemical splash
  • Any symptom that worries you and cannot wait

Go straight to your nearest casualty or eye emergency unit, or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an appointment, and do not wait for a reply from us.

2 Education, not care Where the line sits
Is what I read here a diagnosis?

No. It is general information, written to help you understand.

Everything you read or watch on our site, and everything in our courses and downloadable resources, is for general information and education. It is written to help parents understand childhood eye conditions and feel more confident, not to diagnose or treat any individual child.

No two children are the same. Information that is true in general may not be right for your child. Please do not use anything on this site to diagnose, to delay proper care, or to decide against it. If you are worried about your child's eyes, see an eye-care professional.

Nothing here is a substitute for advice from a professional who knows the facts of your child's case. We actively recommend that you get that advice, and we would far rather you asked than assumed.

Does reading this make Dr Claire my child's doctor?

Only a consultation does that

A doctor-patient relationship with Dr Claire's practice is created when you book a consultation and she sees your child. Browsing the site, reading an article, taking a course, downloading a resource, or sending us a message does not create that relationship, and does not amount to medical advice for your child.

Any guidance Dr Claire gives during an actual consultation is specific to your child, and is the care you can rely on. General content on the site is not, however carefully it is written.

3 What we cannot promise Outcomes, and accuracy
Will my child get the result you describe?

Every child is different, so we cannot promise a result

Where we talk about treatments such as patching, glasses or exercises, we are describing what commonly happens, not what will happen for your child. Outcomes depend on the condition, the child, how early it is picked up, how consistently treatment is followed, and a great many things outside anyone's control.

Nothing on our site, in our courses, or in our resources is a promise or guarantee of any particular result. Your child's progress is between your family, your child, and the professionals caring for them.

What about the stories and testimonials?

Real families, real experiences, not a forecast for yours

When we share a family's story or a testimonial, it is that family's real experience, shared with their permission and conveyed truthfully.

It is not typical, average, or a promise of the same outcome for your child. One family's result is no guarantee of anyone else's, and we would not want you to read it that way.

Is everything on the site correct?

We work hard at it, and we still cannot guarantee it

We work hard to keep our information accurate and up to date, and to reflect good current practice. Even so, medicine changes, mistakes can happen, and something may be out of date by the time you read it.

When in doubt, ask a professional who knows your child. That is not us covering ourselves, it is the honest answer.

5 Your part, and the rest And how to reach us
What is expected of me?

Use your judgement, and follow the professional who has seen your child

By using this site you accept that you are responsible for how you use the information on it, and that you will seek proper professional care for your child where it is needed.

If anything here conflicts with advice from a professional who has actually examined your child, follow the professional who has seen your child. They have something this website will never have: your child in front of them.
